Source-of-Funds Document Guide

Two questions that are often confused: where this money came from, and how the owner came to have money at all.

Source of funds is the origin of the specific money entering the account. Source of wealth is how the beneficial owner accumulated their assets overall. Providers ask both, and answering only the first is a common reason a file comes back for more information.

What satisfies the question is traceability, not volume. A chain that runs from an identifiable origin — employment, business profits, the sale of an asset, an investment return, an inheritance, or a documented loan — through statements and into the account is worth more than a thick folder of unconnected records. Where funds have passed through several accounts or jurisdictions, expect to evidence each step.

Prepare it early. Documents that are straightforward to obtain while you are still resident, still employed, or still in contact with a former accountant can be genuinely difficult to reconstruct a year later, and a gap in the chain holds an application regardless of how legitimate the underlying money is.
